Ian
Kelso - Bio
Ian
is veteran New Media producer and entrepreneur and is currently
the principal at Modern World Communications, a Toronto-based
interactive production, development and strategic consulting
firm.
Most recently Ian was a partner and Executive Producer at Primitive Entertainment
Inc., an independent television and new media production company. From
1999 to 2002 Ian was responsible for developing convergence strategy,
development of interactive properties, and overseeing the marketing and
branding of the company. In 2001 Ian won 1st Prize at the CyberPitch
competition, a pubic pitching forum, at the Banff Television Festival
in Banff, Alberta. As well in 2000 Ian was awarded 2nd Prize at the Wanadoo
Talent Show, a public pitching competition at MIPCOM, an annual television
market in Cannes, France.
From
1997 to 1998, Ian served as Executive Producer, Special Projects
with Bell Canada's media development company MediaLinx
Interactive, publisher of the Sympatico website. At MediaLinx, Ian
co-developed and co-produced the 1998 Nagano Olympic Winter
Games website with partners
the CBC and the Stentor Alliance. The site attracted over 10 million
page views, won top honours from the popular American web guide Lycos,
and is hailed as being one of the largest special event websites produced
in Canada. At Medialinx, Ian was also responsible for the re-development
of Sympatico content areas which included News, Computers & Internet,
and Automotive. In addition, Ian produced several special feature sites
such as coverage of the 1998 Toronto International Film Festival and "Fencing
the Frontier", a site dedicated to information and discussion surrounding
the CRTC's hearings on New Media with partner CTV NewsNet.
Ian
started his career in 1994 with Magic Online, one of Canada's
first Internet and Online services. As Director
of Media Services, Ian launched
Magic's World Wide Web division and dial-up Internet Services and
was involved in all aspects of the business both creative
and corporate.
His clients included the Queen’s Executive Development Centre,
the One of a Kind Show and Sale, CanWest Global, the Government of
Ontario (main site), and the Canadian Marketing Association. Throughout
his time
at Magic, Ian was an early pioneer in streaming audio and video content
for the Internet in such events as eMarché, VideoCabaret (Canada
or Can't), Interactive 96 and a national radio/Internet simulcast
of a concert by the Watchmen. In early 1995, Ian developed and ran
an acclaimed
cultural web magazine "MagicMedia" which featured media
and advertising editorial, a music magazine, an online art and photo
gallery
as well as weekly film industry news.
In
1997 after Magic Online was acquired by TotalNet Inc. Ian
produced live Internet coverage of
the 1996 Neil Young / Oasis concert from
Molson Park in cooperation with Universal Concerts Canada, and
live coverage
of the 1996 Toronto International Film Festival with the Virtual
Film Festival.
Ian
has a B.F.A (Honours) from York
University's Fine Arts Faculty
where he completed an individualized study programme
concentrated
in film production,
screenwriting, photography and creative writing. In his final
year at York, Ian was Founding President of the Fine
Arts Faculty's
first official
student government, the Creative Arts Students' Association.
Ian is currently a founding member of the Board of Directors
and President
of
the New Media Business Alliance, an Ontario-based trade association
for companies specializing in the development and production
of New Media
content. |
