Shakespeare for Kids Storytelling Adventures - Updated for 2008

The program:

Michael Kelly, Artistic Director, of Shakespeare In Action, has abridged five of Shakespeare´s plays, Twelfth Night, The Tempest, Romeo & Juliet, A Midsummer Night´s Dream and Macbeth, suitable for young audiences and their families. The selected community library locations involved will each host six consecutive Saturday morning sessions to read through, discuss, and workshop scenes from the abridged plays in this series. The mini-series will begin Feb 2, 2008 and run through to April 19, 2008, targeting a total of 30 neighbourhood libraries throughout the city of Toronto. The program will stretch over a four month period and will produce 120 Saturday morning sessions serving upwards to 3000 inter-city children.

The Readers Theatre Method

We use a time tested reading technique that has been used by writer, actor, producer and creative director, Michael Kelly to develop an atmosphere that is playful, stimulating and thought-provoking.  Mr. Kelly has used this dramatic model in elementary inter-city classroom´s to address literacy, vocabulary development, and the language learning needs of children between the ages of 7-12, regardless of their current level of learning.  The method uses a reader´s circle and choral approach, which divides the text into discrete units allowing the children to share the reading experience. The children are placed in a circle and read around changing speakers at every set of indicated double lines, this assures that all the children participate equally, while sharing the responsibility of reading the whole play. The model creates an ensemble approach to learning, while featuring a heightened sense of focused listening that achieves maximum retention of the content.

The Artistic Team:  This is a very experienced and distinguished teaching team of senior artists, with a strong commitment to promoting literacy and developing arts education in the community.  Our team is focused on teaching and imparting how to actively engage the children in productive discussion and examination of the language, character, plot development and thematic issues connected to the play.  The artists use proven reader´s theatre techniques to involve all the children in the play reading process.  The reading and discussion is then followed with a short series of theatre games, speech and word play exercises that culminate in a group scene or choral reading.  The children are supplied with take home materials that focus on the story elements and new vocabulary development.

Benefits:  The artists and Shakespeare In Action broaden the audience base for the arts.   We build contacts with the libraries, the parents and the local communities.  The volunteers develop new skills, as well as, discovering a new model for working with the arts in the community.   The community benefits by providing a center of activity (the library) for parents, grandparents, seniors and new volunteers to contribute their support, time, and skills to help create and nurture the "Shakespeare for Kids´ Readers Theatre Saturday Club".

Shakespeare for Kids´ Storytelling Adventures program supports the mission of Shakespeare In Action as a theatre company that offers unique and accessible programming that is serving children, supporting schools and strengthening communities.
